Derek Copeland – Community Minded Resident of Distinction

Derek Copeland, a resident of Charlotte, North Carolina, has built a successful career primarily focused in financial services and commercial real estate. Throughout his career, Derek Copeland has made time for community, which he has received substantial recognition for his contributions.
While attending the University of Florida (UF) in Gainesville, Florida, Mr. Copeland was elected in the 1992 general election, at the age of 18, to serve as a representative on the Hillsborough County Soil and Water Conservation District. This distinction bestowed upon Mr. Copeland the title as being the “Youngest Elected Official in Florida". A few years later in 1995, he received the United States Congressional Gold Medal. The Congressional Award is an award given by Congress to outstanding young Americans. In 1979, the United States Congress established the award program to "recognize initiative, service, and achievement in young people." Derek was one of only 18 recipients across the country to receive this honor and the only one from the state of Florida.
In 1996, Derek graduated with honors from the University of Florida and he was inducted into the UF Hall of Fame and was named the Outstanding Male Graduate award, the highest graduating honor from the Spring 1996 class of over 3,200 students. Because of his time as a student leader and publically elected official, Derek was one of the people featured in Florida Trend magazine's "People to Watch" in 1996.
Over the course of his working career, Derek Copeland interned with American's for Tax Reform in 1996 and then worked for the financial services firms Blackbird Holdings (2000) as a senior analyst, UBS Financial Services (2001) as a senior vice president, Morgan Stanley (2008) as a senior vice president, and SilverRock Wealth Partners (2017) as CEO and President. Today, he is a principal at MCM Partners, a commerical real estate firm that works with building mainly national credit tenant corporations such as Starbucks, Walgreens, Publix in the Southeast United States.
Outside of work, he has served on the Board of Directors for The Steve Smith Family Foundation and Community Link. Currently, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Foundation.
